Sectarianism never sleeps in Larne

The 16-year-old Larne teenager who was brutally assaulted by loyalists in the East Antrim town of Larne last week is lucky to be alive. The youth was hit by iron bars and golf clubs and suffered a compound fracture of the skull as well as other injuries to his head, face and body. Free article

Ludovic Kennedy provokes McBride family

The family of Belfast teenager Peter McBride, who was killed by two British soldiers, are furious at remarks made in an interview with broadcaster Ludovic Kennedy on BBC Breakfast News on Thursday 4 July. During the interview Kennedy, who has campaigned on behalf of the two Scots Guards convicted of the 1992 murder, called for compensation to be paid to the men for the six years they spent in prison. Last week, Gerry Adams officially launched the programme for this year's 15th West Belfast Féile. In his address, the Sinn Féin President praised the work of the Féile Committee over the years. He reminded his audience of the origins of the popular festival in the dark days of 1988, when nationalist communities throughout the North, but particularly in West Belfast, were being demonised by a hostile press. Republicans from throughout Tyrone and Donegal will gather in Clady and parade to Doneloop graveyard this Sunday, 14 July, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the killing of Fian Tobias Molloy by a plastic bullet at the hands of the British Army at the Camel's Hump on 16 July 1972. Free article

Dublin City Council backs glass workers

A motion was put forward by the Sinn Féin group on Dublin City Council on Monday calling upon the Board of Management of Ardagh Glass to immediately set about implementing the redundancy package recommended by the Labour Relations Court for the workers at the Irish Glass Bottle factory. Honour the memory of the Clashmealcon Martyrs

On Sunday 7 July, the 79th anniversary of the siege at Clashmealcon Caves in the North Kerry parish of Causeway, a large crowd travelled to that spot on the Shannon Estuary to pay tribute to the six brave men who fell in defence of the Republic on 16 April 1923. Free article

The highly respected Irish trade union leader Mick O'Reilly and his colleague Eugene McGlone are fighting back against their dismissal following a protracted attempted purge against them by the leader of the ATGWU, Bill Morris. The London-based leadership of the union removed O'Reilly as Irish Regional Secretary - the senior official in Ireland (32 Counties) - and Eugene McGlone, Irish Regional Organiser. Free article
