Several hundred people came to pay tribute to Martin Doherty at a commemoration held in Glasnevin, Dublin, last Saturday, where the terrible events of that night seven years ago, when the IRA Volunteer lost his life, were recalled. Martin, known to his friends as `Doco', removed a bomb that had been planted by enemy agents below a Sinn Féin function. The attackers shot him outside on the street. Free article

Drogheda Corporation took the amazing step of prosecuting a resident of the town for leaving separated waste on the steps of his local authority for the recycling he maintained the local authority was legally and democratically bound to implement. Matthew Coogan, along with some 40 residents, brought some bags of plastic bottles and a roll of newspapers tied up with a bow, addressed to the Mayor, Frank Godfrey. They had brought them to the Chambers of the Corporation for recycling, and as an exhibit to highlight the absence of recycling facilities in the area. Free article

The film-maker and author of controversial book ``The Committee'', Sean McPhelimy, won another victory last week in his long-running libel case against the Sunday Times newspaper. At the Court of Appeal, three judges took only a matter of minutes to dismiss an application by the newspaper to overturn a jury's award to McPhelimy of £145,000 in damages on grounds that the verdict was ``perverse''. Residents of the Cartron Bay estate in Sligo have finally won their 20-year battle to force Cartron Bay Construction Ltd to complete work on the estate built in 1974. In a landmark decision delivered by Judge Ó Caoimh in the High Court, the two directors of the company were held personally liable for the cost of completing the works on the estate, which after 20 years remained unfinished.
