Labour MP raises sectarian attacks in Commons

British Labour MP John McDonnell has won cross-party support for a parliamentary Early Day Motion expressing ``extreme concern [at] the rising number of sectarian attacks, including pipe bomb, nail bomb and firebomb attacks, directed against Catholic homes in parts of Northern Ireland in recent weeks''. The motion has so far gained the support of 22 Westminster MPs, including Jeremy Corbyn, Ken Livingstone, Kevin McNamara, Norman Godman and a number of others from the British Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties. Miscarriage of justice victim Danny McNamee has been awarded £5,000 compensation for the brutality he suffered at the hands of prison officers following an escape at Whitemmor Prison in 1994. Free article

Ó Caoláin critical of Ahern response on RUC

``Absolutely unacceptable'' is how Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin described the current recruiting campaign initiated by RUC Chief Constable Ronnie Flanagan and which has included advertisements in newspapers and on television throughout Ireland. Membership and morale in the party is in free-fall, making Harney's chances of retaining four seats come the next election slim at best. Belfast's Saint Patrick's Day celebrations have been reorganised in line with concerns over the current outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease. The carnival parade to the city centre, which attracted over 90,000 people last year, has been cancelled but a number of local venues have been agreed. Free article
