Cross-border celebration for council chair

There was a large attendance at a special celebration evening in Monaghan town last Sunday to mark the election of the first Sinn Féin Chairperson of Monaghan County Council in 100 years of local government, Councillor Brian McKenna. The Mayor of Derry, Cathal Crumley, the Chairperson of Leitrim County Council, Michael Colreavy, the Vice-Chairperson of Cavan County Council, Charlie Boylan, a number of other Sinn Fein councillors from both sides of the border joined the Eurovision representative Eamon Toal and band. Crumley honours McSwiney in London

The Sinn Féin Mayor of Derry, Councillor Cahal Crumley, was guest speaker at the Connolly Association Terence McSwiney Memorial Lecture, held in Camden Town Hall, London on Saturday 28 October. The lecture, together with a mass, is held annually in honour of McSwiney, the Lord Mayor of Cork, who died on Hunger Strike in Brixton Prison on 25 October 1920, protesting against his continued incarceration by the British authorities. Landlord doubles rents overnight

The rents of 29 families living in Dublin inner city's Enaville Avenue and St Patrick's Street have been doubled, following a protest they mounted to save their homes. Free article

De-toxing the gas works site

Children and their parents protested in Pearse Street, last Thursday, 26 October, against the Dublin Docklands Development Authority (DDDA), which has the responsibility to remediate the 22-acre site where gas was produced for some 200 years. The site has to be cleaned before development can go ahead. Free article

Victory secured for home helps

Four years ago, when Councillor Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin was canvassing for election, he learnt that home helps were paid by the health boards at a rate of 75p an hour. ``Following a strong campaign, especially in Cork by the AT&GWU, which enlisted the home helps into their ranks, and the work of the local union rep in Cork, Mary Arrowsmith, home helps are now on £4.50 an hour minimum, and this month the rate goes up to £5 an hour,'' Ó Súilleabháin says. Belfast Bill of Rights meeting

Another Council victory against incineration

At last Tuesday's meeting of the Longford Council, councillors threw out the regional waste plan for the Midlands. Longford joins seven other councils, Louth, Donegal, Laois, Roscommon, Wexford, and Galway County and Corporation, which have rejected Minister Dempsey's plan for regionally based incineration.
