The crisis in the Irish poultry industry was raised in the Dáil last week by Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin. He called for government action on concerns over the safety of imported poultry products and on the threat to the home industry, including both poultry producers and processors, posed by the growing volume of imports. Dublin Councillors Larry O'Toole and Aengus Ó Snodaigh went to witness the hearing of Belmondo Wantete's case in Dublin's District Court last week. The case has aroused widespread protest at the apparent racism of the state institutions. Free article

Tax equality not just cuts

Mary Harney wants to cut tax rates, by 2% on the 44% and 22% rates. Bertie Ahern wants to widen tax bands and increase allowances while leaving tax rates unchanged. The European Central Bank wants the Dublin Government not to cut taxes at all. Free article
