At the same time as the Criminal Justice (Terrorism and Conspiracy) Bill was being forced through parliament largely unopposed - except on the grounds that MPs had not had long enough to think about rubber-stamping it - human rights campaigners, Irish groups and others concerned at its implications were cramming into the Jubilee Room just down the corridor to register their opposition to the legislation on the rather more solid grounds that it is undemocratic, racist, in contravention of international human rights laws, unnecessary and morally wrong. Informer recruitment continues

A young Dungannon man has been on the receiving end of a series of four approaches from the RUC in the last six months, the most recent coming on Tuesday 25 August. In that incident, the young man claims that as he walked along the town's Ballygawley Road at about 5.30pm two men travelling in a car pulled up and told him to get in the car. The man recognised the two from past recruitment attempts as RUC Special Branch members. Free article

Portadown - a nationalist nightmare

Following Belfast City Council's new commitment to provide bi-lingual signs in any street where two thirds of residents wish for them, Sinn Fein's South Belfast councillor, Sean Hayes, has urged people to take up the challenge. Workshops on policing submissions

Electoral register examined by RUC

An employee of the electoral offices has been accused of passing electoral register forms to her RUC partner in Aghadowey, Co Derry. Two witnesses, who wish to remain anonymous, approached An Phoblacht with the claim, after the woman was seen handing completed forms to her partner, an RUC man. Free article

Tom Williams remembered

The British government and its entourage ``are not mediators, facilitators, neutral parties, referees or honest brokers,`` Sinn Fein Assembly member Barry McElduff reminded republicans attending the Tom Williams Commemoration last Sunday. ``They are our political enemies and adversaries who are out to prevent `Fenianism from rearing its rebellious head',`` he said.
