Dozens of republicans took to the streets of Belfast on Wednesday 6 March to remember IRA Volunteers Mairéad Farrell, Dan McCann and Seán Savage who were gunned down in Gibraltar 25 years ago. Among those who took part in the white line picket at Andersonstown was West Belfast Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey, former MEP Bairbre de Brún and local councillors Emma Groves and Caoimhín Mac Giolla Mhín. Seamus Finucane also attended.

Flying start for Francie Molloy Mid-Ulster by-election campaign

5 February 2013

THE campaign to get Francie Molloy elected to replace Martin McGuinness as MP for Mid-Ulster got off to a flying start on Sunday 3 February. Activists from across Ireland travelled to Galbally, County Tyrone, to hear outgoing MP Martin McGuinness endorse Molloy as “the right man for the job” as he addressed hundreds of party members and supporters. Elected representatives from all of the Six Counties were present, including many from Counties Derry and Tyrone, the heart of the Mid-Ulster constituency. Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD was also there. Lending her support to the campaign, Sinn Féin deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald TD spoke and warned against complacency in holding the seat against a unionist challenge. “Clearly, retaining the Mid-Ulster seat will be a challenge to the party and one we must face resolutely and with determination,” Mary Lou said.

New Lodge Six anniversary

5 February 2013

HUNDREDS of people from across north Belfast braved a cold February night on Sunday 3 February to mark the 40th anniversary of when six local men from New Lodge were gunned down jointly by the British Army and a loyalist death squad. The shootings began when UDA killers opened fire on unarmed IRA Volunteers Jim Sloan and Jim McCann, killing them both. In the aftermath of the killings, the British Army opened fire from the rooftops of the Artillery Flats, killing four others, including IRA Volunteer Tony Campbell, who was also unarmed when he was shot dead. The three other local men to die were Ambrose Hardy, Brendan Maguire and John Loughran. Sinn Féin's Caral Ní Chuilín spoke at the New Lodge Masscre mural at Donore Court and reiterated the families’ call for justice.
