Newry bombers have nothing to offer

Gerry Adams

This week's car bomb attack outside Newry courthouse was an attempt by dissident republicans to prevent next month's planned transfer of policing and justice powers, said Sinn Féin. The PSNI said it was a "sheer miracle" no one was killed. Officers were left with hardly any time to clear the area around the Newry courthouse before a bomb weighing up to 250lb exploded in a car just after 10pm on Monday.

A Greek tragedy

Clashes broke out as tens of thousands of strikers marched through Athens on Wednesday to protest against austerity plans forced on Greece

"All euro area members must conduct sound national policies in line with the agreed rules". This was the opening line in a statement from EU heads of government made in Brussels on 11 February. The statement was about Greece and it welcomed the austerity measures being introduced by the errant EU member in an attempt to meet the EU's demand to bring its budgetary deficit down by 4% in 2010. In other words - commit economic sabotage on itself to fulfill the wishes of an outdated and outmoded economic big brother.
