Slógadh Shinn Féin 2009

Bhí Slógadh Sinn Féin i mbliana lonnaithe san fhoirgneamh Gaelach is nua aimseartha ar an oileán seo - Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin. Ainmníodh an áit in ómós do Sheán Ó Canáin, sean phoblachtach, nach maireann, a tháinig amach as imtheorannú sna daichidí agus a bhí gníomhach le saol na Gaeilge sa chathair go bhfuair sé bás agus na pleananna réabhlóideach don áras úr na Gaeilge ag teacht i dtír.

RUC Special Branch failed to stop killing

Nuala O’Loan

RUC Special Branch officers who did not prevent the murder of 26-year-old Margaret Perry in order to protect an informer have escaped prosecution despite a damning report by former Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan. The body of the Portadown woman was discovered in a shallow grave in a County Sligo forest in 1992, a year after she had gone missing. Perry was abducted and murdered by three British agents within the IRA after she discovered they had been involved in a criminal robbery. The three agents were subsequently exposed and executed as informers by the IRA.

Cuimhní ar an Ghaeilge i nDoire

Ba gnáthach le muintir na cathrach seo, Béarlóirí, 'the creeve' a ghlaoch ar na ranganna Gaeilge a bhíodh ar siúl. Bhí ranganna sna 1930í ar Shráid an Fheabhail, Conlon's Rooms, agus ansin bhog siad go Halla Naomh Cholm. Faoin am sin bhí an-bhaint ag cléir na cathrach leis an Chonradh ach laghdaigh sin sna 50í. Luaigh Séan Ó Canainn go ndeachaigh sé chuig a chéad rang Gaeilge in Halla Naomh Choilm Cille sa bhliain 1940, chuig rang a ghlac Séamas Ó Dochartaigh, búistéir, a bhí i ndiaidh theacht amach ón Ollscoil i mBaile Átha Claith. Dúirt sé gur fhág sé an rang de thairbhe barraíocht béime ar an ghramadach. Ina dhiaidh sin eagraíodh na ranganna in halla beag ar Shráid an Easpaig, áit a bhfuil Bunscoil an Túir Fhada anois.

Battle for the Americas in Honduras

THE daring return of Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, deposed in a military coup on 28 June, to the capital Tegucigalpa on 21 September has galvanised the country's resistance movement and prompted the coup leaders to unleash a fierce wave of military repression. Zelaya remains under siege in the Brazilian embassy with his family and dozens of his supporters. The coup regime, headed by Roberto Micheletti who installed himself as "president" after organising the kidnapping at gunpoint and exile to Costa Rica of the country's elected president, responded to Zelaya's return by deploying the police and military against thousands of protesters, resulting in an unknown number of deaths and thousands of detentions.

Volunteer Diarmuid O'Neill commemoration

Bandon Sinn Féin Cllr Rachel McCarthy speaking at the Diarmuid O’Neill Commemoration on Sunday

"In the weeks and months ahead we have the opportunity to show that the legacy of Diarmuid O'Neill, of Tony Ahern and Dermot Crowley, of Kilmichael and Crossbarry, remains alive in West Cork. Never before has the economic and moral bankruptcy of the political establishment been plainer." So said Bandon Sinn Féin Councillor Rachel McCarthy who spoke at the annual Diarmuid O'Neill commemoration at Timoleague Cemetery last Sunday. Diarmuid O'Neill was an unarmed IRA Volunteer who was shot dead in 1996 by London police in a flat while attempting to surrender.
