'Still Imprisoned?' project provides support
Ballymurphy Republican Ex-Prisoners presented a cheque for £450 for the "Still Imprisoned?" project to Joe Austin on Tuesday 11 August. The presentation took place in Tar Anall. Joe Austin told An Phoblacht that the "Still Imprisoned?" project came about because many republicans suffer as a result of the trauma of being involved directly or indirectly in the conflict: "These may include alcoholism, drug dependency, financial management problems, depression and anxiety. The "Still Imprisoned?" project is there to help. It provides a 24-hour help line and personal support within a short time, and is run entirely by republicans. The project has three tiers of support - those with first hand experience of traumas, another tier who raise funds and provide financial support, and a third tier of drivers and 'befrienders'. The departure of Hugh Orde as Chief Constable of the PSNI leaves a mixed legacy. While he presided at a time of positive transformation in policing in the Six Counties much remains to be done and his role with others in continuing to withhold the truth about killings by the crown forces was negative. Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD has claimed that the current concerns regarding Liam Carroll's 30% stake in Greencore prove that the sugar industry was sacrificed in the interests of property speculators. Carroll bought the shares with a view to acquiring the substantial land assets belonging to the company once it set about closing the remaining sugar factories at Carlow and Mallow. Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA Fra McCann has written to the Housing Minister Margaret Ritchie and the Housing Executive asking why 9,700 grant applications have been cancelled by the Housing Executive. Sinn Féin have been concerned at the growing numbers of people who have been turned down for assistance for Housing Executive grants to carry out urgent works to their homes - many of which are essential either because of the poor condition of the homes or the medical condition of the applicant. Wicklow Sinn Fein launched its No to the Lisbon Treaty campaign on 17 August. The launch took place outside the Town Hall in Bray and it was timed to coincide with an event organised by the European Commission. Speaking after the launch Cllr. John Brady said: "We decided to launch our 'No' to the Lisbon Treaty campaign to coincide with the European commissions 'Talk to the EU' event. The last time the Irish people spoke to the EU was when we rejected the Lisbon Treaty in June 2008. It seems that when the Irish speak on issues relating to the EU in particular treaties our voice is ignored. We have seen this with the Nice Treaty and again with the Lisbon Treaty which was rejected by 53% of the Irish people." The newly established Bob Doyle/Dinny Barry Sinn Féin cumann, Newbridge, Co. Kildare was officially launched on Saturday, 22 August. The night was very well attended, giving credence to local Sinn Féin activist Seán Downey's statement that they "have been overwhelmed with interest from the public wishing to join the local cumann". Fuair Cáit Uí Chadhain bás ar an 8 Lúnasa seo caite agus í 84 bliain d'aois. Bhí sí gníomhach ar feadh i bhfad i saol agus i bpolaitíocht na Gaeilge agus an Phoblachtachais. Bhí sí páirteach san fheachtas le tabhairt ar RTÉ tuilleadh cláracha Gaeilge a chraoladh; b'iomaí lá sa chúirt aici, agus thug sí a cás a fhad leis an Ardchúirt ar ócáid amháin. Chaith sí tréimhse sa phríosún in 1983 mar chuid den fheachtas ag daoine diúltú ceadúnas teilifíse a cheannach mar agóid faoina laghad cláracha Gaeilge a bhí ar RTÉ. Níl amhras ann ná gurbh iad leithéidí Cháit a thug ar an Stát TG4 agus seirbhísí eile a chur ar fáil do Ghaeilgeoirí. The Market community in Belfast and indeed the wider republican family lost a great friend with the death of Jeff O'Neill last May. Jeff passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer which he saw through with tremendous courage and immense dignity. Throughout his illness Jeff was determined to maintain his personal dignity and was adamant to the end that he would not be a "burden" on his family. |
