CALL FOR UNITY: Cara McShane speaking in Chicago

Sinn FÉIN Councillor and Chair of Moyle Council, Cara McShane, welcomed the continued support of Irish Americans for Irish unity and independence during a recent series of engagements in Chicago where she updated people on the progress of the Irish peace process. She said the US connection to Irish republicanism has always been a critical element of our strategy to achieve our objectives. "It is as critical today as it has been in the past. In fact, it has become more critical as we continue to map out a way forward to the eventual reunification of Ireland," she told her Chicago audience.

'Sinister' HSE plans to centralise medical card applications

IMPACT: Gerry Dolan

Plans to centralise the processing of all applications for medical cards represent a "sinister HSE agenda" to save money by making it harder and slower for eligible people to obtain medical cards, according to IMPACT trade union. In a letter, which the union is sending to all local councillors and other elected representatives this week, the union also says the proposal will "cost jobs in virtually every county" as services are centralised in Dublin.

Mullingar comrades remembered

"Going back through the decades there is a strong tradition of republicanism in Mullingar and the surrounding area. Jim and Ita Dalton were an integral part of that tradition." So said veteran republican Tommy McMahon as he addressed a large crowd at Walshestown Cemetery on August Bank Holiday Monday, where he unveiled a commemorative plaque to the 'two unyielding republicans'. Speaking of his first experience of republicanism in Mullingar, Tommy remembered, as a young man, being part of the guard of honour which escorted the bodies of IRA volunteers Peter Barnes and James McCormack to Ballyglass Cemetery for re-internment in July 1969. "Thousands gathered that day in Mullingar to pay their last farewell. I will never forget the reaction of the people of Mullingar as they broke into spontaneous applause as a mark of respect as the two coffins passed by."

THE death of Belfast republican GERARD McKEE took place on Thursday 16 July. Born in the Falls Road area in October 1957, Gerard grew up as the conflict in the North developed into the armed insurrection that saw the IRA challenge British rule in Ireland. Like so many people of his generation, Gerard rose to the challenge and took up arms against the British enemy and spent many years in prison as a result. Jim McGivern delivered the main oration at Gerard's graveside, an edited version which An Phoblacht carries here.
