Cork mayor is wrong to celebrate British Army
On 8 November, the Lord Mayor of Cork, Brian Bermingham (Fine Gael), will hold a concert to commemorate those Corkmen who died fighting in the British Army in the First World War. This follows the decision last year by the then Lord Mayor, Councillor Donal Counihan, to wear a poppy while attending the annual Remembrance Day ceremony run by the British Legion. Sinn Féin Health & Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has called for a full Dáil debate on the outcome of the HSE's review of chest x-rays and CT scans in Louth and Meath hospitals and has also questioned the huge cost of the review at over €330,000, a sum which will come out of the budget for hospitals in the North East region. Amnesty International urged US President-elect Ombama to show true leadership by making human rights central to his new administration. The organisation is calling on the new government to take concrete steps in its first 100 days, which would show genuine commitment to bringing the USA into line with its international obligations. The Lord Mayor of Belfast Sinn Féin Councillor Tom Hartley has described his recent visit to Cork as a humbling experience. THE five Irish republicans from Cork who died on hunger strike were honoured on Sunday 26 October. A commemoration was held in St Finbarr's Cemetery to honour Terence MacSwiney, Joe Murphy and Michael Fitzgerald (who died in 1920) and Donnacha de Barra and Andy Sullivan (who died in 1923).
