Unionist paramilitaries target councillors

UNIONIST paramilitaries have targeted Sinn Féin councillors in Fermanagh and Antrim in the past week. Death threats against Sinn Féin councillors in Fermanagh have been condemned by Sinn Féin Fermanagh/South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew who called on unionist political leaders in the county to challenge those responsible.

SDLP approach to justice

SINN FÉIN'S Policing spokesperson in the North, Alex Maskey, has said this week that nationalists and republicans would be disappointed as once again the SDLP has put "narrow self-interest" above the need to see powers on policing and justice transferred. Maskey's comments came after SDLP leader Mark Durkan once again put securing the ministry from his party in front of actually securing the transfer of the powers.

Closure shows precarious position of chicken industry

CHICKEN producers from around Ireland gathered in Cappoquin, County Waterford, on Monday to join growers and breeders in a rally to highlight the precarious position of the Irish chicken industry. The rally followed the news that the town's major industry, Cappoquin Chicken, has gone into liquidation. Founded over 40 years ago, the company is a family-owned operation for three generations and employs 150 full-time and 100 part-time workers.

End 'cash cow' approach to state companies

RESPONDING to reports that state companies such as the ESB and Bord Gáis will be asked to hand over higher dividends to the exchequer next year, Sinn Féin Economy spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD said that the move highlighted the folly of privatising state companies, as happened with Eircom and partially with Aer Lingus. "State companies can be an excellent source of revenue for the exchequer and the media suggests the Government is coming round to this perspective.

Walking in the steps of the Civil Rights marchers

THE original route of the world-famous Civil Rights march of October 1968 will be retraced next month as part of a weekend of events in Derry including an international conference addressed by President Mary McAleese. The conference, in Derry City's Guildhall over Saturday and Sunday, 4/5 October, will also hear other speakers, including Kadar Asmal, Professor of Human Rights at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa, and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness. Sectarian coat-trailing in Stoneyford

AN APPLICATION by loyalists to hold five marches within a month in the village of Stoneyford has been described by Sinn Féin MLA Paul Butler as an exercise in sectarian coat-trailing. An application by the Pride of the Village flute band to stage five loyalist marches in September has been seen as a blatant attempt to increase sectarian tension in the area.

Robinson should end politicking

IT'S TIME for joint First Minister Peter Robinson to get down to real issues instead of engaging in "petty politics" about presentational changes by Development Minister Conor Murphy, Sinn Féin Assembly member John O'Dowd has said. O'Dowd was speaking after the DUP leader sent a letter to Conor Murphy complaining about the publication of an Executive paper on planning which referred to the Six Counties as "the North" or "the North of Ireland" and spoke of "Derry".

'Loyal' order ignores parades determination

A MARCH by the Black Preceptory which passed the nationalist Short Strand area last Saturday, 30 August, has been slammed by Sinn Féin East Belfast representative Niall Ó Donnghaile. "This is now the third year in a row where this particular parade has blatantly flouted a Parades Commission determination not to play music while passing St Matthew's Church and nationalist homes at Strand Walk.

Greening the North

ÓGRA Shinn Féin's Green Post Box Campaign continues to spread across the North rapidly with more than 100 red post boxes now painted a more acceptable shade of green. Young republicans in Tyrone are particularly keen in the current 'green offensive' with over half of all the green post boxes being in the O'Neill County.
