UDA violence : Minister under pressure to scrap funding

SDLP Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie is under increasing pressure to scrap the allocation of over £1 million to the UDA. British Ministers had earmarked the million pound payoff before the restoration of the power sharing institutions at Stormont.

Special Branch allowed loyalist killers free reign

Special Branch officers gave their agents free reign to murder a former RUC officer, Laurence Templeton told the media last week. Templeton, who had spent 30 years as an officer including three within Special Branch, said he felt compelled to speak out to help relatives of collusion victims.

There will be no anonymity for former RUC officers called to testify before the inquiry into the murder of Portadown man Robert Hamill. Last week the British House of Lords upheld the decision by inquiry chairman Edwin Jowitt that officers should attend the hearing unscreened.

Newry - Dundalk Dual Carriageway opens

Sinn Féin Transport Minister in the Six Counties, Conor Murphy, MP, MLA and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, MP, MLA, last Thursday, 2 August participated in the official opening of a new 14 km (9 mile) dual carriageway between Newry and Dundalk. Dermot Ahern, TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs also took part in the event.

International : Venezuela has potential to restore belief in more equal society

Like many people in Ireland, I was introduced to the politics of Venezuela by the documentary The Revolution will not be Televised. Although it dealt with a far from unusual event- the overthrow of democratically elected a President by a US supported coup - it was a remarkable and powerful film. The Irish film crew captured the electric atmosphere as a show of popular support for President Chavez convinced sections of the military to end the dictatorship after only two days.
