Protest at Bellinaboy last Thursday

Over forty activists opposed to the controversial Shell pipeline/refinery scheme proposed for Erris, County Mayo gathered in the pouring rain outside the Department of Justice in Dublin Friday last to protest against the imprisonment of three local fishermen on charges of assault which the men and the protestors strenuously deny.

ICTU conference : Strong opposition to privatisation voiced

Ballymun Regeneration Limited (BRL), the Dublin City Council agency appointed to oversee the regeneration of Ballymun in Dublin's northside, is in direct contravention of its mission statement - to provide at least 20% local labour - and has failed in its duty to ensure all contracts awarded go to companies compliant with labour law, according to Andy Smith the Regional Organiser with the Building and Allied Trades'Union (BATU).

'Closure of A&Es must be resisted' - Ó Caoláin

Commenting on reports that the Health Service Executive is to close A&E units at three more hospitals, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has called for a "united national campaign" against these service cuts. Deputy Ó Caoláin said:

Success for Kilkenny Youth Weekend

The second annual Kilkenny Youth Weekend took place in Kilkenny City on the weekend of 14 and 15 July. The weekend saw Ógra Shinn Féin activists from all over the country descend on the South-East. The weekend saw a mixture of political discussion and healthy debate as activists were treated to a wide-ranging Clár of events. The aim of the weekend was two-fold. Firstly, to galvanise support for Ógra in the area. The second was to bring Ógra activists from all over the country and provide them with a forum for debate and discussion. It was clear as activists returned home on Sunday afternoon that both aims were successful.

West Tyrone ÓSF to hold 'Slán Abhaile' weekend

West Tyrone Ógra Shinn Féin has announced plans to host the 6th Annual Demilitarisation Weekend in Omagh in August. The weekend will take place on the 3-5 August and is to coincide with the British Army camp in the town being officially closed.

Honours degrees for ex-POWs

Two republican ex-prisoners, Kevin Campbell and Kevin McGettigan recently graduated from University of Ulster, Magee, with an honours degree in Irish Language and Literature. The two began the degree after funding was secured by Tar Abhaile, the Republican ex-prisoners group based in Derry, to enhance the skills and employability of ex-prisoners and their families. Pius McNaught chairperson of Tar Abhaile commented: "I would like to congratulate the two men on succeeding in attaining their degree. It is another success story for former political prisoners in which Tar Abhaile through CFNI and SEUPB peace funding, has been able to enhance their individual training and their prospects for proper employment opportunities. This is in line with the other training opportunities which Tar Abhaile provided to former prisoners and their families such as the HGV, Bus Licence and Health and Fitness instruction through which many republican ex-prisoners who participated in such training have since sought and found employment." Kevin Campbell, who is also a Sinn Féin councillor, paid tribute to Tar Abhaile for the assistance which they were able to give to himself, Kevin McGettigan and many other former political prisoners, who have been to take up new forms of employment:
