International - Governments warned on climate change

A tropical Ireland? Melting ice-caps? Disappearing glaciers? Climate change has become part of the vernacular and a reality of our times. However, little is being done by those responsible for the "ozone crisis" to solve a problem that is threatening not only nature, but human survival. However, there is good news, as Nicholas Stern, a former chief economist with the World Bank, warned governments that climate change could tilt the world's economy into the worst global recession in recent history. So, maybe those who choose to ignore the Kyoto Protocol and other international agreements aimed at decreasing pollution levels may decide to change tack now that their economies are in danger.

Shared vision for Long Kesh site

As demolition squads moved in to begin the destruction of Cage 20 in Long Kesh so began the first phase of the regeneration of one of the most contentious sites of the last four decades of the conflict in the North.

Suicide crisis - British Government launches prevention strategy

"Suicide across the island has become the biggest killer of our young people. In the last decade, the incidence of suicide in Ireland has increased by more than 25%. In 2003-4 there were 577 people who died through suicide. Figures recently compiled indicate that last year, the total number of people who died as a result of suicide was 645."

Adequate income for all, not re-election, should be Budget objective

Budget 2007 is just over a month away. The PDs are looking for "a substantial middle-class tax cut". Fianna Fáil backbenchers are no doubt at this very moment salivating at the prospect of buying the next election in a 'give-away' budget.
