Family challenges Lisburn City Council over UDR memorial

The family of Michael Power, who was shot dead in 1987, are challenging Lisburn City Council over its decision to erect a monument to the UDR in Lisburn city centre. According to the Power family the UDR was implicated in Michael's killing and they say the memorial planned by Lisburn Council "is an insult to the many nationalists killed by the UDR and its successor the RIR."

Interview: Faris Arouri, Peace and Freedom Youth Forum

Faris Arouri

24-year-old Palestinian Faris Arouri is chairperson of the Peace and Freedom Youth Forum, based in the West Bank. His organisation lobbies political parties on national and social issues. Faris is from Ramallah, a city in the centre of the West Bank. It has been declared for a long time that the capital of a Palestinian state would be Jerusalem, but Ramallah is the capital in the interim. Faris comes from a political family which was active in the Palestinian National Movement, a local branch of the PLO when that organisation was illegal. When he was in Ireland recently, attending a youth conference, An Phoblacht got his views on the current crisis in Palestine, which has been overshadowed by the Israeli invasion of Lebanon

Private property rights secondary to needs of people - Crowe

Seán Crowe

Sinn Féin's Social Affairs spokesperson Seán Crowe TD this week said he was not surprised at the results of an Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) monthly house price index which showed that house prices in the 26 Counties were up 15.4% in July this year. Arguing that the 26 County Government is interested only in 'creating the appearance of doing something, rather than actively challenging vested interests' he pointed out that the right to private property should always be secondary to the needs of the people.

An Ghaelscolaíocht: Suíomh Streachailt

Bhí go leor sna meáin an tseachtain seo faoin Ghaelscolaíocht agus ach go háirithe an conspóid, a bhain le alt san Indo (agus ní ghlacfainn focal an Indo mar fhírinne choíche, go háirithe i leith na Gaeilge de) bunaithe ar ráiteas tagartha ón Aire Oideachais, go raibh Gaelscoileanna ag coinneáil uimhreacha na ndaltaí i ngaelscoileanna síos d'aonturas. A leithead de raiméis níor chuala mé riamh, is soiléir cé chomh sásta agus a bhéas Kevin Myers leis an bhfoilseachán céanna.
