Arson attack on school

The beleaguered nationalist Whitewell community in North Belfast was targeted, for the second time in 24 hours, when loyalists torched their school in the early hours of Tuesday morning 26 July. The sports hall of St Mary's Star of the Sea was severely damaged in the arson attack. The blaze was so intense that it took fire fighters over two hours to bring it under control.

International: Highest official monthly tally of violent deaths since the fall of Baghdad

Three years after the Bush administration declared the end of the war, an average of more than 100 civilians per day were killed in Iraq during the month of June, the United Nations reported on Tuesday 18 of July, registering what appears to be the highest official monthly tally of violent deaths since the fall of Baghdad. In its report, the United Nations said that 14,338 civilians had died violently in Iraq in the first six months of the year with "the overwhelming majority of casualties being reported in Baghdad".

Price hikes hit households hardest

A 34% increase in gas prices, 20% in ESB charges and a 12.5% hike in VHI premiums, these are just some of the price rises facing households as energy and health market regulators allow massive price hikes to kick into the Irish economy in the coming weeks and months.

Tugann na Ziónaigh faoin Liobáin Arís

Ó tháinig deireadh leis an gcogadh cathartha sa Liobáin sa bhliain 1990, nuair a rinne Airm na Siria an tír a ghabháil, ba dócha go raibh deireadh tagtha leis an tréimhse dhorcha úd. Ar feadh sé bliana déag, mhair an tsíocháin go dtí go ndearna na hIosraelaigh ionsaí ar an tír trí sheachtain ó shin. Ba iad na hIosraelaigh ba chúis is mó don chogadh cathartha sna 1980í nuair rinne siad ionsaí ar an tír i 1982. Faoi cheannas Ariel Sharon, bhí na hIosraelaigh i bhfeighil agus freagrach as ucht an tslada uafásacha a tharla i gcampaí dídine Sabra agus Shatila, nuair a ligeadh do na míleataigh Críostaíocha scrios agus ár a dhéanamh ar neamhthrodairí.

Cúlchaint

Múinteoir óg Gaeilge is ea Máire Nic a' Bháird.Tá sí ag glacadh cás cúirte in aghaidh PSNI i mBéal Feirste agus an pobal Gaelach ag tacú léi. Ar an 25ú la de Bhealtaine agus í ar a bealach amach as chlub oíche ag caint i nGaeilge lena cairde, tháinig oifigeach de chuid an PSNI chuici agus dúradh léi stopadh den chaint. Lean sí uirthi ag caint i nGaeilge agus tugadh í go dtí stáisiún na bPoilíní agus cúisíodh í; dúradh go raibh iompar mí-órdúil ar siúl aici.
