Fears for rural way of life

Six County Environment Minister Jeff Rooker's new Draft Planning Policy, which all but prohibits new single dwellings in rural areas, has come under fire amidst fears that it may have a detrimental effect on rural communities. Fears have been expressed that this will drive up the price of houses.

Emergency services undervalued

Dublin Sinn Féin has launched a discussion document calling for investment and reform in Dublin Fire Brigade. A Safer Dublin was launched last Tuesday 21 March at a press conference adressed by Aengus O Snodaigh TD, Councillor Daithí Doolan and Tony McDonnell, SIPTU Convenor for Dublin Fire Brigade. The event was chaired by recently selected Sinn Féin candidate for Dublin Mid-West Joanne Spain.

New Dublin Councillor nominated

Críona Ní Dhálaigh

Dublin Sinn Féin has announced that the party will nominate Críona Ní Dhálaigh to replace Andrew O'Connell, the party's outgoing Councillor for the South West Inner City, at the April meeting of Dublin City Council. Elected to the council in 2004 Andrew has reluctantly had to step down due to family and work commitments.

Memorial plaque to be removed

The forthcoming demolition of the well known Dublin pub, The Widow Scallons, to be replaced by apartments, has raised concerns about the retention of the commemorative plaque dedicated to IRA Volunteer Martin 'Doco' Doherty, killed by unionist paramilitaries in an attempted bomb attack on the pub in 1994.

Suicide Prevention Day of Action

Ógra Shinn Féin organised a Suicide Prevention National Day of Action on Wednesday 22 March. Ógra cumainn and youth activists were active across Ireland, from Derry to Kerry, with protests, candle lit vigils, information stalls, leaflet drops and public talks on the issue.
