International: Colombia - Victory for the right

The parties backing Colombian President Alvaro Uribe won the general election that took place on Sunday 12 March. The results present Uribe with a convincing possibility of winning the presidential election in May, in which he is now candidate after a controversial constitutional change. The electoral turnout was less than 50%.

Mahon Tribunal: Politicians' tall tales

The Flood/Mahon tribunal into corruption in the planning process in the 26 Counties is trudging into its ninth year of sittings and has for the most part disappeared from public view, but the current module of investigation dealing with the relatively small issue of the rezoning of lands in Ballycullen, South Dublin has thrown up an incredulous story of conflicting testimonies by serving Fianna Fáil and Progressive Democrat ministers, and the leader of the Labour party Pat Rabbitte.

Comóradh ar Bhreithlá Sands: 1916 agus an Ghaeilge

In Stormont last Thursday 9 March Irish language activists gathered in Stormont to mark the occasion of the birthday of Bobby Sands MP, who would have been 50 had he survived the war against republican POWs waged by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1981. At the Irish language event chaired by Sinn Féin Údarás member Gráinne Nic Éidigh, language activist and former POW Gearóid Mac Siacais outlined the atmosphere in the H-Blocks at the time and the importance of the Irish language in the republican struggle inside and outside the jail. Janet Muller of the Irish language rights campaign group spoke of the challenges ahead for the Irish language and for activists. Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD spoke of the link between republicanism and the language revolution around the time of the 1916 Rising 90 years ago. Here we reprint his address.

Annual Feargal O'Hanlon memorial lecture

A large gathering attended the Feargal O'Hanlon memorial lecture in the Four Seasons hotel in Monaghan on Sunday 5 March. The lecture has been held annually since 1982 as a commemoration for IRA Volunteer Feargal O'Hanlon, killed in action during an attack on Brookeborough British Army barracks on 1 January 1957.

It was a good weekend for Cork. On Saturday, Derval O'Rourke became the first Irish woman to win a gold medal in the World indoor athletics championships. Also on Saturday evening the Cork footballers continued their long sequence of wins over Dublin in Cork.

Political bias surrounds loyalist museum

The 'irregular payments' made to a loyalist museum are clear evidence of, "political bais" by British government departments, says Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams. Adams says civil servants cleared the funding because they feared a refusal would provoke, "significant political fallout".

Sam Marshall remembered in Lurgan

The 16th anniversary of the murder of Lurgan man Sam Marshall by British state forces was marked by a picket of the RUC/PSNI barracks in the town on Tuesday evening, 7 March. Several dozen people took part.
