Dublin Women learn from European experience

A delegation of women from all over Dublin travelled to the EU Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday at the invite of Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald. The women activists, from right across the community sector, were accompanied on their trip by Dublin City Councillors Larry O'Toole and Dessie Ellis.

North council move welcome

Rally threat halts the race to the bottom

Last week workers at Doyle Concrete in Kildare won an important victory. The family-owned company at Cappanargid, outside Rathangan in Kildare, had brought in Eastern European workers, on changed pay and conditions, to replace workers who have been forced to take obligatory redundancy.

Nuacht na nOibrithe - Report details murderous attacks on trade unionists

A total of 145 people were killed worldwide in 2004 for trade union activities, an increase of 16 deaths on the previous year, according to the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions annual report published last month. The report covers 136 countries from five continents. It documents over 700 violent attacks on trade unionists, and nearly 500 death threats

A key Sinn Féin conference on the issue of Social Partnership was addressed by leading trade unionists last Saturday in Dublin. The conference was opened by the party's Workers' Rights spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD, who said this was a crucial period for trade unions and those concerned with upholding workers' rights.

Commemoration - The Manchester Martyrs

Phillip Allen, Michael Larkin and Michael O Brien were hanged in Manchester England on 23 November 1867. The men were sentenced to death in a show trial designed to strike terror into the upsurge of Fenian resistance to British rule. The three became known as the Manchester Martyrs. A commemoration for the Manchester Martyrs was held in Bandon, County Cork last Sunday.

Portglenone residents terrorised

A drug-dealing gang has brought misery to residents in an estate in the North Antrim village of Portglenone over the last 18 months through a campaign of anti-social behaviour. Houses and cars have been attacked in the Smyth Crescent and West Road area of the village. On one occasion thugs attempted to torch the home of a grandmother living on her own.

Fograí Bháis - Mick Morrissey

Mick Morrissey

The death occurred on 27 October of Mick Morrissey, a member of Limerick Sinn Féin for almost 35 years. His death, a result of a long illness, came only a few days after his 73rd birthday. A native of Ferrybank in Waterford, Mick came to Limerick in 1967 and worked for many years in Cannock's department store (now Penneys) in O'Connell Street. Prior to that he had lived and worked in England for some years.

Charlie Ferris

The death of 89-year-old Tyrone republican Charlie Ferris in the early hours of Sunday 9 October has marked the end of an era and has brought pain to the many people who had the privilege of knowing him. Charlie passed away peacefully at his home in his beloved Glenhordial.
