Well known Basque figures targeted

On Monday 21 November, the Spanish Government will put on trial 59 Basque citizens out of 200 arrested and imprisoned in police operations. These were ordered by the Audiencia Nacional's Judge Baltasar Garzón against the Basque pro-independence movement. The Audiencia Nacional is a special court with an investigative capacity.

"We're a community organisation. We're here for the long haul, we won't be worn down," so says Eamonn O'Brien, Vice Chairperson of the Handball Centre and Social Club, Ballybough in Dublin's North Inner City. The club is fighting attempts by the company which runs the GAA's Croke Park Headquarters to close it down, ending a 25-year community commitment.

Mapping the road to an Ireland of Equals

An open conference will be held in Monaghan on Saturday 26 November to discuss the shape of a new Ireland. The conference, entitled An Ireland of Equals/Eire na gComhionann, forms part of Sinn Féin's Céad Bliain commemorative events and brings together activists from within and outside of Sinn Féin, to engage on ways of advancing human rights-based governance and participatory democracy in a new Ireland.

Fine Gael plan to downgrade Irish slammed

Fine Gael proposals to downgrade Irish from a required Leaving Certificate subject have been greeted with a barrage of criticism. At last weekend's party conference Enda Kenny stated that "many are leaving school without any reasonable command of the language", and that it was in the national language's best interests that it's present status as a required Leaving Certificate subject be abolished.

Ógra activists urged to mobilise for congress

Ógra Shinn Féin has announced this week that it is to hold its annual congress in Dublin from Friday 20 January to Saturday 21 January. Ógra also revealed that, for the first time, the congress will be a two-day event. The event will be a highlight next year's Ógra activity. An Ógra Shinn Féin Handbook and DVD will be released at the event. The congress will conclude on Saturday with a huge mobilisation of Ógra Shinn Féin activists in the capital.

Fógraí bháis - Geordie McGilloway

Derry republicans were saddened to hear of the death of Geordie McGilloway on 24 October. Patrick Joseph, (Geordie) McGilloway was born into a republican family. During the '50s they were part of a band in the Racecourse area of Derry, whose banner proclaimed, 'Erin's sons shall rise Again'.
