South African Minister to attend Céad Bliain rallies South African Government Minister Ronnie Kasrils, who is in Ireland next week, will be the guest speaker at a number of Sinn Féin Céad Bliain rallies in Belfast, Derry and South Armagh. Kasrils is the former Director of Intelligence of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the revolutionary military organisation which fought an armed struggle against the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Kasrils will speak at public meetings in Belfast, Derry, Tyrone and South Armagh during his visit on 24, 25 and 26 October. ESB in Basque power station controversy A power station built by Irish state company the ESB is to start operations next week in the Basque Country despite opposition from local residents. In a case reminiscent of the Corrib pipeline controversy in Mayo, the inhabitants of Zornotza, Bizkaia, are protesting against the combined cycle power plant, so called because it uses a combination of natural gas and steam to produce electricity. Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún last week hosted a delegation of community activists from across Ireland to the European Parliament. The delegation travelled to Brussels to lobby for a PEACE III programme for the period covering 2007-'13. As well as meeting with MEPs the group lobbied officials from the European Commission for continued assistance for community development throughout the Six Counties and the border region. Joe played a pivotal role in An Cumann Cabhrach over the years and the Central Committee is delighted to still have the Cahill name associated with the organisation. Mandate representing 40,000 bar workers and retail staff, has decided not to engage in talks on a new Social Partnership agreement. Mandate General Secretary John Douglas said: "In our judgement, the modest pay increases being proposed by the Government and employers in advance of the commencement of talks on a new social partnership deal will not adequately compensate lower paid workers for significant price increases which bear disproportionately on people on lower incomes."
