Unionist attacks take racist turn

The homes of three migrant worker and their families in Portadown, County Armagh have been targeted by unionist paramilitaries in petrol-bomb attacks. The houses at Craigwell Avenue are close to the unionist Corcrain Estate. Craigavon Sinn Féin Councillor Brian McKeown said those to blame were clearly intent on causing serious injury to the occupants.

UDA boss gets bail

Ousted unionist paramilitary boss Jim Gray was released from jail on Thursday 15 September on £15,000 bail. Former East Belfast UDA boss Gray, of Knockwood Park, Belfast, who is accused of money laundering was arrested near Banbridge, County Down along with his partner Sharon Moss in April this year as he drove towards the border. The PSNI allegedly found a bank draft for €10,000 and nearly £3,000 sterling in Gray's car. He also faces charges of possessing and concealing criminal property and money laundering.

Maghaberry strip-searching "inhuman"

After visiting Maghaberry Prison, County Antrim, on Tuesday 20 September, a Sinn Féin delegation including Catriona Ruane and Gerry Kelly accused the North's prison authorities of abusing the human rights of prisoners. According to Ruane, the delegation spoke to republican prisoners who complained about, "the excessive strip-searching of prisoners", and the threat of attack from unionist paramilitaries.

Gerry Adams urges US to remain engaged

On a four-day trip to the United States Sinn Féin President Gerry briefed members of the US Congress including Senator Hillary Clinton on the Irish Peace Process in Washington DC. He also met with the State Department.

Sinn Féin Education and Library Board representatives supported a parents' protest at The Mall, Armagh on Thursday 15 September when British Minister Angela Smith attended the SELB for lunch. Protesting parents from Mullaghbawn and other areas demanded their children's right to a school bus service.

Donegal crime conference

Crime conference in Inishowen, Donegal

Sinn Féin has rejected claims by establishment politicians that it is 'hijacking' the issue of spiralling crime in Inishowen, County Donegal. Donegal Councillor and Mayor of Buncrana Pádraig Mac Lochlainn hit out at Fianna Fáil and Fianna Gael for "failing the people of Innishowen" by not attending a meeting held in Quigley's Point on Monday 12 September to discuss the seriousness of crime in the peninsula.A Derry crime gang is alleged to have carried out a series of armed robberies and burglaries in the area.

Over 500 jobs are under threat at Irish Ferries following the company's decision to offer workers an impossible choice between taking voluntary redundancy or lower pay, forcing SIPTU to issue immediate notice of strike action.

Bizarre Labour U-turn on Aer Lingus

In a bizarre u-turn Labour councillors on Fingal County Council voted against a Sinn Féin motion opposing the privatisation of Aer Lingus that has been backed by Labour councillors in Dublin City and South Dublin Councils. The motion was passed by 13 votes to eight at the September meeting of the Council after Sinn Féin Councillor Felix Gallagher was backed by Independent, Green, Socialist and Fianna Fáil councillors.

Strike at ESB

ESB apprentice workers protesting at the offices of the TEEU asking for proper representation from their union

Over 1,000 ESB workers are on the picketline, as An Phoblacht goes to press, in the first major strike at the company since 1991. Early reports indicate that so far the pickets have been widespread across the 26 Counties and despite earlier reports suggesting strike-breaking by ATGWU members in the South Dublin area, the situation there has now been resolved.
