Mexico's indigenous rebels, the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN), have launched a new political initiative, ruling out the use of armed struggle and seeking to create a network of groups fighting to build democracy from the bottom up.

PSNI not serious about unionist violence

Sinn Féin has accused the PSNI of not even pretending that they are serious about dealing with ongoing unionist paramilitary violence in Belfast. Councillor Tom Hartley was speaking after the PSNI left behind valuable evidence after a loyalist pipe-bomb attack on a house in the Beechmount area of West Belfast on Friday 12 August.

UTV apologises

Sinn Féin's Michael Ferguson has welcomed a public apology broadcast by UTV news in which the station admitted that a statement attributed to the West Belfast MLA had been "inaccurate" while apologising "for any distress or confusion caused".

Education inequality linked to health system problems

Sinn Féin TDs this week highlighted the link between educational inequality with the crisis faced by the Irish health services. Unless the issue of restricted access to education and training for health professions is addressed the crisis in Irish health services is set to worsen.

Dodie McGuinness in Australia

Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle member and Deputy Head of the party's International Department Dodie McGuinness recently made a whirlwind tour of Australian cities where she briefed Australian and Irish-Australian audiences on the latest developments in the Irish Peace Process. The visit followed in the wake of the recent historic IRA announcement of an end to its armed campaign.

Restoration of Newry monument

During the early hours of Friday 20 August 2004 the Republican Memorial in St Mary's Cemetery in Newry was smashed to pieces by loyalists. It was the latest in a long history of attacks on republican monuments in the area.

North Antrim hosts first Republican Youth Weekend

North Antrim Ógra Shinn Féin is set to host their first ever Republican Youth Weekend on between Friday 19 and Sunday 21 August. The weekend will be based in the Ballintoy area of North Antrim and will consist of revolutionary talks, strategic reviews and social elements such as a sightseeing tour of the Giants Causeway.
