As infighting continues within the ranks of the UDA, East Belfast's so-called brigadier, Jim Gray, has been ousted by the loyalist paramilitary organisation. Gray was one of six brigadiers running the North's largest loyalist grouping. It is believed he took control of the UDA in East Belfast in the mid-1990s, after its then leader became a recluse due to alcoholism. The party has set the objective of increasing its representation on the Council this time around, having secured eight seats in 2001. Sinn Féin plans to further strengthen its mandate and to consolidate its position as the largest party grouping on the Council. Nine for Strabane District Council Sinn Féin has selected nine candidates to contest the Derg, Glenelly and Mourne Electoral Areas of Strabane District Council in the local elections. In 2001, Sinn Féin secured seven seats and became the largest party grouping on the council and is confident of building upon this success this time around.
