Richard Gott is a writer, historian and journalist who worked for many years for The Guardian newspaper in London, mostly as a foreign correspondent in Latin America. He first went to Cuba in the early 1960s, after the revolution, excited about the possibilities of change. In Cuba, Gott met Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and many of the leaders of the revolution and became so fascinated by Latin America that decided to go and work there.

Sinn Féin opposes water charges

At our weekly Assembly Members meeting at Stormont, Sinn Féin unanimously backed the industrial action initiated by the trade unions in opposition to proposals by Direct Rule Minister John Spellar that will lead to the loss of over 600 jobs in the Water Service in the Six Counties.

Call to investigate Sugarloaf dumping

There should be an immediate investigation in to dumping on the Little Sugarloaf in Wicklow, says Bray Town Councillor John Brady. "I inspected the dump on 3 February and found at least ten violations of the licence conditions," said the Sinn Féin councillor.

Céad Bliain exhibition launched in Belfast

If Irish Government opposes sanctions then it must prevent them

Speaking as the Dublin Government met on Tuesday to discuss the latest report from the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC), Sinn Féin Assembly member for North Belfast Gerry Kelly said that "if the Irish Government opposes sanctions then it will stop them happening".

Derry people demand Doherty's release

Hundreds of friends and neighbours of Derry republican Martin 'Ducksie' Doherty, who was jailed for his refusal to give evidence to the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, placed a full-page advertisement in Tuesday's Derry Journal calling for his immediate release.

Belfast Paddy's Day funding blocked again

Funding for the annual St Patrick's Day Carnival in Belfast has once again been blocked by bigots in City Hall. The £30,000 funding for the festival, to be held at City Hall, had previously been approved by the council's Good Relations Committee and the Policy and Resources Committee, with the approval of a number of unionist councillors, who had acknowledged the efforts of Carnival organisers to reach out to all communities.

Gaeltacht residents left out in cold

Sinn Fein's Údaras candidate Gráinne Mhic Géidigh has voiced her disappointment at the withdrawal of the evening bus service between Falcarragh and Dungloe via Gweedore. She was speaking after the Lough Swilly Bus Company withdrew its service connecting Letterkenny to Dungloe via Cloughaneely and Gweedore parishes.

Protest vigil at Tallaght Hospital

Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe on Saturday afternoon organised a protest vigil at Tallaght Hospital in Dublin "in support of and solidarity with the staff and patients". The Tallaght-based TD was joined by councillors from the area and members of the local community who are concerned about the ongoing crisis affecting the hospital.

A massive crowd gathered at Flynn's Cross, Coolderry, in South Armagh, last Sunday 6 February, to remember IRA Volunteer Séamus Harvey, shot dead by the British Army on 16 January 1977. The commemoration ceremony was addressed by Newry and Armagh Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy.

Kathleen Holden

Kathleen Holden from Poleglass in Belfast, who died at the end of January, was a remarkable woman. When we first knew Kathleen Holden in 1976 she lived in Turf Lodge, below the Black Mountain. My children called it "Kathleen's Mountain". She was one of a very special group of women from Turf Lodge and Andersonstown who adopted the Troops Out Movement.
