Stepping up the fight against HIV/AIDS

PSNI asked forensic lab to doctor evidence

British Army and PSNI interference with forensic material has called into question all convictions based upon forensic evidence over the last 30 years. This revelation followed the discovery by a Belfast defence lawyer that suggests the PSNI routinely request government forensic scientists to doctor the evidence and further revelations that the British Army was deliberately allowed to contaminate material gathered as evidence in a recent case.

Spanish and French Prisons today - Basque and Irish political ex-prisoners talk

Last Thursday, 4 December, a Sinn Féin delegation met with Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Foreign Affairs minister Brian Cowen to discuss the Cory report into collusion. The delegation, led by Gerry Adams, included Martin McGuinness, Bairbre de Brún, Mary Lou McDonald, Mitchel McLaughlin and Dessie Macken. The meeting took place in Government Buildings in Dublin and lasted an hour and a half.

PSNI wait six weeks to warn of death threat

Antrim Sinn Féin councillor Martin Meehan is furious that the PSNI took six weeks to warn him of a death threat against himself and party colleagues, choosing to inform him as he attended the South Antrim Assemby election count centre on 27 November.

Ferris attacks miserly attitude to social welfare

Speaking in Leinster House on Wednesday on the Social Welfare Bill, Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris contrasted the attitude of those in power towards the wealthy, with what he described as their "miserly" attitude to those living on social welfare and low wages. He contrasted the manner in which working-class communities were treated when it came to social welfare increases and grants, to the generosity displayed towards the rich in terms of tax breaks and the recent funding of the Punchestown Equestrian Centre.

Fishing restrictions slammed

Sinn Féin Dáil spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris, has strongly criticised the latest EU proposals to further reduce the number of days Irish fishermen can spend at sea. The measures would prevent Irish Sea fishermen from spending more than 15 days at sea, or ten days in the case of some categories.

This week marks the 200th anniversary of the cessation of United Irish resistance in Wicklow, spanning the Rebellion of 1798 to the Rising of 1803. Sinn Féin to oppose estimates in Wexford

UDA up tempo in sectarian intimidations

A Dunmurry pensioner's home has been the subject of a sectarian attack for the 36th time by members of the UDA. Trevor George (73), who lives on the edge of the loyalist Seymour estate with his wife Alice (69), was at home on Monday 3 December when masked UDA members pelted his home and conservatory with petrol bombs, breaking a number of windows and causing scorch marks to the outside of the building.

Branch harassment in Dublin

Two Dublin Sinn Féin members, from opposite sides of the city, were rudely awakened in Special Branch raids last Friday morning. Under the pretext of suspicion of possession of firearms, their homes were searched and the pair were arrested under the catchall Offences Against the State Act.

McGuinness follows Emmet to Trinity

Sinn Féin cumainn in colleges across the 32 Counties play a vital role in the party's political project. This was the message Martin McGuinness brought to the weekly meeting of the Uí Chadhain/Tone Cumann on his visit to Trinity College in Dublin last week. In both their role in providing an important activist base on the ground in colleges and bringing a youthful perspective on politics to the party, the importance of student republican activists cannot be overemphasised, he said.

SF candidates selected in Milford and Letterkenny

Sinn Féin has selected candidates to contest next year's local election in Milford and Letterkenny town. The Milford convention, which took place on Sunday in the Milford Hotel, unaminously selected 22-year-old Donal Cullen from Devlinreagh, Carrigart, as the sole Sinn Féin candidate to contest the county council election in the Milford electoral Area.
