Protestors force Bolivian President into exile

Bolivia's neo-liberal political parties have regained control of the South American country's Congress after a general strike put an end to the government of President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. The parties agreed to formalise Sanchez de Lozada's resignation, his exile to Miami and the election of Vice President Carlos Mesa as the country's new president.

General Jackson under pressure

General Mike Jackson appeared before the Bloody Sunday Inquiry for a second time last week to answer accusations that, together with a junior officer, Major Ted Loden, who actually signed the document, he had concocted a handwritten, so-called Shot List of 'gunmen' and 'nail-bombers' killed and injured on Bloody Sunday. Also, the claims of the informer Paddy Ward, who has been giving evidence to the Inquiry, have been dismissed by Martin McGuinness as "pure fantasy".

Rolling work stoppages are set to hit the 26 Counties' three largest airports in the coming weeks as transport minister Seamus Brennan refuses to respond to union requests for talks on his break up proposals for Aer Rianta. Also, IMPACT union cabin crew working for Aer Lingus are taking industrial action after management refused to negotiate with them on new productivity proposals which would mean the airline employees working longer hours for less money.

The Sinn Féin president predicted that there would be significant gains, and that the party would have a strong presence on the next city council.

Cavan Sinn Féin celebrated its growing strength at a well attended first annual dinner dance last week, with Gerry Adams and Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, TD for Cavan/Monaghan, as guest speakers on the night.

Albany Noraid visit Dáil

A delegation from Irish Northern Aid in Albany, New York State, visited the Dáil on Tuesday. Led by Paul Murray, the group was addressed in Leinster House by Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin (seen in our picture greeting Paul Murray) who spoke on the day's big events in the Peace Process and the continued important role of Noraid and friends of the Irish struggle in the USA.
