SINN FÉIN Dublin South by-election candidate Shaun Tracey has called on voters for his party to transfer Left after voting Sinn Féin Number 1. He called on the electorate to not be star-struck by the arrival of former RTÉ Economics Editor George Lee into the contest but to look at the policies of the party for which he has declared, Fine Gael. EDUCATION : School principals fight bid to retain academic elitism

IN RECENT WEEKS, three groups of primary and post-primary school principals, representing more than 150 schools, have spoken out against plans by the majority of the North's grammar schools to continue to use academic selection to admit pupils next year. The principals, mainly from the Catholic sector, were reacting to a statement issued by the North's Commission for Catholic Education (CCE) on 30 March which urged schools to phase out academic selection by 2012 but added that Catholic schools "may" continue to use entrance exams in the short term. Use Pension Funds to Build Schools

SINN FÉIN EU Candidate for Ireland South Toiréasa Ferris has called on the Irish Government to actively pursue the offer by the Irish Pensions funds that they would be prepared to invest up to €6 billion over the next three years in a range of State infrastructure projects as part of a plan that could secure about 70,000 jobs in the construction industry. In particular the funds should be considered for building and upgrading schools. Free article

Limerick rallies against crime gangs

AN estimated 5,000 people brought Limerick City centre to a standstill last Sunday as a special protest march against the gangland killings in this city took place. The event, organised by Stephen Collins, the father of murdered businessman Roy Collins, included a rally outside city hall where Mayor John Gilligan called for an end to the violence. Free article
