UVF behind Tobermore killing

The UVF is being accused of killing a 36 year old man in Tobermore, County Derry in the early hours of Saturday morning 29 July. Local sources told An Phoblacht that the dead man, 36 year old Ronald Mackie from Stirlingshire, Scotland, was involved in an altercation with the commander of the local UVF as he attended a disco in Tobermore United Football Club. A gang took Mackie and his two companions outside the building where they savagely beat him and forced his friends to watch. Free article

British climb-down on Crossmaglen land grab

Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh Conor Murphy has welcomed a climb-down by the British government over plans by the PSNI to steal land adjacent to Crossmaglen Square. The majority of land owners have now been issued with letters informing them that the plans to 'vest' their land have been abandoned. The U-turn comes after a campaign led by Sinn Féin and the local residents which involved meetings at the highest levels of both the British and Irish governments. Free article

Children terrified after paint bomb attacks

A mother of three whose home was attacked by loyalist paint bombers has said her youngest children, aged eight and six, are now too afraid to return to their Donegall Road home. A number of windows were broken by the force of the paint bombs while paint was splattered across the front of the house. Free article

Coiste Summer School heads for South Armagh

Coiste na nIarchimí, the umbrella organisation for republican ex-prisoners, will host its annual summer school this year from 16-18 August in the Tí Chulainn Cultural and Heritage Centre, Mullaghbawn, Co Armagh. The event has been organised under the Coiste Processes of Nation Building (PNB) Project. The overall theme for the three days will be; "Cherishing the children of the nation equally." The theme of children was selected to highlight the equality at the core of the1916 Proclamation ninety years ago and to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Hunger Strike in 1981 when Bobby Sands made his oft quoted comment "Our revenge will be the laughter of our children".
