Standing "like a rock" against Free Trade Area

Leaders of all countries of the Western Hemisphere, except Cuba, met in Mar del Plata, Argentina from 28 October to 5 November for the Fourth Summit of the Americas. The key issue was the deadlock around the resumption of negotiations on creating the US proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas. The FTAA would open Latin American markets to US business while keeping in place US and Canada protectionist policies. Free article

UVF informer moved to secure wing

Special Branch informer and UVF leader Mark Haddock is being held in a special secure unit at Maghaberry Prison after the PSNI warned jail authorities that his life would be in danger from UVF associates after he was named as an informer last month. Free article

It was revealed this week that a total of 242,000 people in the Six Counties have still not completed forms for the new electoral register and only have until 18 November to do so. The annual report of the Chief Electoral Officer gives statistics about the register since the Electoral Fraud Act was introduced in 2002 and shows new legislation has served only to disenfranchise voters. The court-martial of seven British paratroopers accused of murdering an Iraqi youth in May 2003 collapsed last Thursday when the British military judge ordered that charges be dropped and, controversially, accused Iraqi witnesses of lying and seeking "bloody money". Free article

Kevin 'Beaver' Kearns - An appreciation

Omagh became a poorer place on 30 August with the sudden death of Kevin 'Beaver' Kearns. Beaver joined the Republican Movement in the early '70's and was subsequently jailed for his activities. On his release from Long Kesh he married his sweetheart Maresa and they had five children, Colm, Ciarán, Pól, Daniel and Joanne. Free article
