Sinn Féin has rejected claims by establishment politicians that it is 'hijacking' the issue of spiralling crime in Inishowen, County Donegal. In a bizarre u-turn Labour councillors on Fingal County Council voted against a Sinn Féin motion opposing the privatisation of Aer Lingus that has been backed by Labour councillors in Dublin City and South Dublin Councils. The motion was passed by 13 votes to eight at the September meeting of the Council after Sinn Féin Councillor Felix Gallagher was backed by Independent, Green, Socialist and Fianna Fáil councillors. Over 1,000 ESB workers are on the picketline, as An Phoblacht goes to press, in the first major strike at the company since 1991. Early reports indicate that so far the pickets have been widespread across the 26 Counties and despite earlier reports suggesting strike-breaking by ATGWU members in the South Dublin area, the situation there has now been resolved.
