Ní Fhearaíosa is mayor of Kerry

Councillor Toiréasa Ní Fhearaíosa was on Wednesday afternoon elected mayor of Kerry, the first time a member of Sinn Féin has held the position. Sinn Féin National Chairperson and MEP for Dublin, Mary Lou McDonald, said that the election is "an indicator of the change which is sweeping through Irish politics". "Not only is she a shining example for other young people who want to become involved in politics, but she has become the first female mayor of Kerry, and only the third to hold the position of chair," said McDonald. "I know that she will work tirelessly to include everyone, particularly those within society who are most vulnerable and most in need." Free article

Huge turnout for funeral of former republican prisoner

There was a large turnout for the funeral in Derry on Wednesday 15 June of former republican prisoner and blanketman, Tony Quigley. Tony, a 59-year-old father of three, died in Altnagelvin Hospital after a short illness. Free article
