Union recognition "not an issue" for Taoiseach

Replying to a Dáil Question from Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin on Tuesday, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said the right to union recognition is "not a major item" on the EU agenda. The Cavan/Monaghan TD had called on the Taoiseach in his role as EU President to launch an initiative to copperfasten union recognition. Free article

The Independent Workers' Union (IWU) held its first annual conference last weekend, with the ATGWU's Mick O'Reilly as the guest speaker. The IWU, which represents over 800 workers, mainly in the Cork area, will be led by National Secretary Noel Murphy. Free article

Republicans are to name the recently opened road bridge over the River Bann at Toomebridge in County Antrim the Rodaí MacCorlaí Bridge, after the United Irishman who was executed in the village after the 1798 Rebellion. Free article

New President for Conradh na Gaeilge

Last weekend, Nollaig Ó Gadhra was elected President of Conradh na Gaeilge at the organisation's Ard Fheis in Ennis, County Clare. Ó Gadhra is the 30th President of Conradh na Gaeilge since the organisation was founded in 1893. Free article
