Fishing restrictions slammed

Sinn Féin Dáil spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris, has strongly criticised the latest EU proposals to further reduce the number of days Irish fishermen can spend at sea. The measures would prevent Irish Sea fishermen from spending more than 15 days at sea, or ten days in the case of some categories. Free article

Ó Conaire an réabhlóidí

Next week, a group of people linked to Galway's Left will launch an initiative to reclaim Padraic Ó Conaire from what they term the "grip of the establishment". Michael Dwyer-Wicklow United Irishman

This week marks the 200th anniversary of the cessation of United Irish resistance in Wicklow, spanning the Rebellion of 1798 to the Rising of 1803. The event is being marked by a lecture in Dunlavin on 5 December by Dr Ruan O'Donnell of the University of Limerick and by the unveiling of a monument to Michael Dwyer in Kiltegan on 14 December at 2pm. Sinn Féin to oppose estimates in Wexford

Sinn Féin councillors in Wexford, Enniscorthy, New Ross and Gorey will vote against the annual estimates on all four local authorities in County Wexford this month. Speaking following a meeting of Councillors and local election candidates in Gorey on Sunday, Cllr John Dwyer outlined Sinn Féin's position in relation to the local authority budgets. Free article

Minister negligent over violence against women

Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has shown negligence by failing to take any "decisive action" during this year's 16 Days Against Violence Against Women, says Sinn Féin Dáil spokesperson on Justice, Equality and Human Rights, Aengus Ó Snodaigh. UDA up tempo in sectarian intimidations

A Dunmurry pensioner's home has been the subject of a sectarian attack for the 36th time by members of the UDA. Trevor George (73), who lives on the edge of the loyalist Seymour estate with his wife Alice (69), was at home on Monday 3 December when masked UDA members pelted his home and conservatory with petrol bombs, breaking a number of windows and causing scorch marks to the outside of the building. Branch harassment in Dublin

Two Dublin Sinn Féin members, from opposite sides of the city, were rudely awakened in Special Branch raids last Friday morning. Under the pretext of suspicion of possession of firearms, their homes were searched and the pair were arrested under the catchall Offences Against the State Act. Free article

McGuinness follows Emmet to Trinity

Sinn Féin cumainn in colleges across the 32 Counties play a vital role in the party's political project. This was the message Martin McGuinness brought to the weekly meeting of the Uí Chadhain/Tone Cumann on his visit to Trinity College in Dublin last week. In both their role in providing an important activist base on the ground in colleges and bringing a youthful perspective on politics to the party, the importance of student republican activists cannot be overemphasised, he said.
