Cork City Manager ignores council over Kinsale Dump

In an amazing display of contempt for the vote of councillors, Cork Corporation executive has continued to propose use of the Kinsale Road dump as the proper place for a Waste Recovery Facility (WRF). Three times councillors have asked the City Manager to go back and find other more suitable accommodation for the city's WRF; three times he has returned with the same proposal, with minor adaptations. Newtown House inquiry opens

This week saw the opening of a High Court inquiry into into the East Coast Health Board's running of Newtown House, a place of ``secure accommodation'' for disturbed young people who needed special care. The inquiry was ordered by Judge Peter Kelly in November last following the death from a drugs overdose in Dublin of 15-year-old Kim O'Donovan, who had absconded from Newtown. Free article

Students need more support to lower drop-out rate

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) is calling for an increase in the provision of career guidance in second-level schools as well as increases in student grants and financial support at third level. This is needed to alleviate the problem of drop-out in Irish universities. The student body was reacting to a distressing report by the Higher Education Authority that found that 17 percent of Irish university students fail to complete their courses. Free article

Adams launches Michael Young campaign

Michael Young was 15 years of age when he decided to experiment with sniffing aerosols. Many people associate solvent abuse with anti social behaviour but Michael was a quiet, helpful teenager who was ``kind to his family and well liked by his neighbours''. His death two years ago was as sudden as it was unexpected. He only sniffed aerosols once but that one mistake, that one moment of madness, cost him his life. Free article

Two new Mayo Sinn Féin cumainn

Sinn Féin has set up two new Cumann as part of the ongoing development of the party in Mayo. One is centred in Newport and he other in East Mayo, taking in the Swinford, Charlestown and Kilkelly areas. Free article
