South Belfast Sinn Féin councillor Sean Hayes has called on Aer Lingus to ``apologise to the nationalist people of the North'' after it was disclosed that the airline sponsored a concert by the RUC band in Limerick last Saturday night, 25 November. Free article
Courage of victims saluted

Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has saluted the courage of victims of child sexual abuse who have recently come forward to face their abusers and help secure convictions. He also praised the students at St. Louis Convent School, Monaghan, for their initiative in protesting at the lenient sentence given to convicted child sex abuser Vincent McKenna at Cavan Court last week. Budget could end service charges divisions

Councils across the 26 Counties were voting on spending estimates this week for the next financial year, and across them all the issue of service charges loomed. Sinn Féin councillors were involved in key debates and votes in Dublin, Sligo, Cork and Kerry. In many councils it was a simple case of straightforward opposition to the charges, but on Sligo Corporation, Sinn Féin councillors confronting the opportunism and two-faced attitude of Fine Gael and Labour councilors were forced into taking some very hard decisions in favour of the greater common good. British government proposals to introduce a `Brit-disc' for road hauliers must be resisted by the Dublin government, says Sinn Feein TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin. British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown has proposed a £7450 annual charge fo a dis allowing passage through British jurisdiction for truckers. Free article

There was an outcry last Monday (27 November) at the treatment of Pakistani visiting businessmen, who were quite wrongly arrested at Dublin Airport and despatched to Mountjoy by Dublin Immigration Police. They went to court and were summarily released with an apology. Free article

Although the Sunday afternoon deluge cut short the proceedings at this year's St James' commemoration parade in West Belfast, the first ever commemoration march in the area was still a worthy success. Free article
Policing tour a great success

Last week, the Troops Out Movement held a speaking tour on Policing in the north of Ireland to coincide with the final reading in parliament of the Policing Bill. Successful public meetings were held in Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford and Sheffield. The speakers were Jim McCabe from Relatives for Justice, Frances McCauley from Springfield Residents Action Group (Belfast) and Martin Meehan from Sinn Féin. Free article

The Parle Cumann of Sinn Féin, Castlebridge, wishes to pay tribute to its loyal member and comrade, Tony Furlong, Ballyboggan, Castlebridge, who died suddenly at the weekend. Tony had been a member of the cumann since its beginnings two years ago and was a proud and active member. Free article
