A NEW REPORT by campaign group ‘Shell to Sea’ has revealed how €1,600billion worth of oil and gas reserves in Ireland’s seabed have already been licensed to private companies, with the state gaining only a tiny fraction of the profits. Free article

Dublin memorial service for South African miners

SINN FÉIN TD Seán Crowe represented the party at a memorial service in Dublin in honour of 34 South African miners shot dead by police during a protest at the Lonmin mine on 16 August. A further 78 miners were wounded in the shootings. Free article

THE SAD PASSING occurred on Sunday 2 September of Bundoran, County Donegal, republican Andy Carty. A former POW, Andy was from a family with a long and proud tradition of republican activism. Several of Andy’s uncles saw active service during both the Tan War and the Civil War, a number of them playing prominent roles in the Battle of Pettigo in 1922. Indeed, Seán ‘Shaw’ Carty, an active republican up until the time of his death in his 85th year, was jailed during the 1920s where he went on hunger strike and again from 1939 to 1945. Free article

NIALL DONNELLY passed away on 5 September. Niall was a Dublin Bus driver before becoming a taxi driver, a lifelong trade unionist and had stood as a Sinn Féin candidate in local elections in the 1980s and also in the 1987 general election for the north Dublin suburb of Ballymun. Free article

The Hunger Strike of the previous year, in which ten republican prisoners died in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh, had broken the British policy of criminalising the prisoners and, by extension, the struggle for Irish freedom.
