Movement on North-West dual carriageway

THE first in a series of all-Ireland ministerial meetings on cross-border transport and road safety has been welcomed by Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty.
Sinn Féin Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy chaired the discussions, held in Enniskillen on Friday, 14 September, which involved DUP Environment Minister Arlene Foster and 26-County Transport Minister Dempsey.
Pearse Doherty said:
“One of the key issues discussed at the meeting was the upgrading of the main arterial route in the North-West (N14, A5 and N2) to dual carriageway status. Support for this project was agreed at the All-Ireland Ministerial Council meeting in July. It is vital for the economic regeneration of the North-West that speedy progress is now made. The ministers agreed the next steps to move this project on and agreed the management structure required.
“Other issues discussed were cross-border, community-based rural transport, the Belfast/Dublin rail link and the restoration of two bridges on the Monaghan/Tyrone border. It is expected that work on the restoration of the two bridges will begin in 2008.
The next meeting will take place in the 26 Counties in December and Conor Murphy will host the third meeting in Newry in March 2008.
