Donal Óg’s sporting chance

MALE sports ethos and male sports fans who are otherwise obsessed by post-match communal baths, hugging and kissing are usually openly hostile to gay men, so it must take a huge amount of courage for someone like Cork’s Donal Óg Cusack to admit his homosexuality in the rugged world of hurling. The apparent general acceptance of his action is encouraging.
When Australian professional rugby league star Ian Roberts came out in 1995, many others in the sport supported him on the grounds that people should be able to be true to themselves. TV sports presenters appeared in a poster campaign against homophobia conducted by the Lesbian and Gay Anti-Violence Project.
Any chance that their colleagues across all the sporting codes and RTÉ, TV3, BBC, UTV, Setanta and Sky Sports might take this topical opportunity to take a stand against homophobia and hate crime here as well?
