THE SHOCK REVELATION that the Garda have been illegally recording phone calls at Garda stations for more than 30 years – coming on the same day as the sudden resignation of Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan (25 March) – has ramped up the pressure on Justice Minister Alan Shatter to also “walk the plank”, Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said. Glasnevin Cemetery historian and former An Phoblacht columnist and Sinn Féin activist Shane Mac Thomáis died suddenly on Thursday 20 March. Shane’s father, Éamonn, another noted historian as well as a broadcaster and author and IRA activist, was Editor of An Phoblacht in 1972 and 1974. Free article

THE DEATH has occurred of Meath republican Seán Cumiskey, a friend of the late Sinn Féin Councillor Eddie Fullerton in Birmingham in the 1970s and one of the six men who in 1977 defied state forces to fulfill IRA Volunteer Frank Stagg’s dying wish to be buried in the Republican Plot in his local cemetery in Mayo.
