THE Sinn Féin Ard Chomhairle last week decided that deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness should accept an invitation by Co-Operation Ireland to attend an engagement in Belfast which was also attended by Úachtarán na hÉireann, the Queen of England and First Minister Peter Robinson. GERRY ADAMS spoke at the West Belfast Sinn Féin Convention in the Felons’ Club that selected ex-prisoner Rosie McCorley as a replacement MLA for Paul Maskey MP on 24 June. The British queen remains British and the queen the morning after this historic handshake, just as Martin remains an Irish republican committed to ending the Crown’s involvement – or, more accurately, the British Government’s involvement – in Ireland. Boxer Paddy Barnes is looking forward to once again challenging the best in the world for gold at the London Olympics and just before he headed off to training in Dublin and Italy before taking the worldwide stage in London, Paddy took time out to go head to head with Alex Maskey, himself a successful amateur boxer of some renown in his day who lost only a handful out of 75 fights.
