O'Dea should resign or be sacked

Sinn Féin Dáil leader Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has said that Defence Minister Willie O'Dea abused both democracy and the courts and should resign. He said his "continuing defence of the indefensible" made his position untenable. He added that if the minister did not voluntarily resign, Taoiseach Brian Cowen should sack him from the Cabinet. Funding secured from British government

SINN FÉIN PRESIDENT GERRY ADAMS, WRITING in his blog 'Léargas' on the Belfast Media Group site (www.leargas.blogspot.com), has revealed that the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure, Nelson McCausland, has committed to bringing forward a draft strategy on minority languages to the Executive by the end of March, one element of which will be "to enhance and protect the development of the Irish language as set out in Section 28D of the Northern Ireland (St. Andrews) Act 2006." Adams welcomes political developments in Basque Country

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has welcomed the outcome of the weekend conference of the Abertzale Left Regional Assemblies (including Batasuna) which agreed a new political strategy for progress. The Resolution, 'Standing up for Euskal Herria' commits Abertzale Left to using 'exclusively political and democratic means' to advance its political objectives. Free article

Shell to Sea protestors jailed

As two Shell to Sea activists were sentenced last week in Castlebar Circuit Court, Sinn Féin's Mayo county councillor Rose Conway-Walsh attacked the sentences, saying that "putting protesters in jail will not bring a solution to these problems". Free article

Gerry Adams unanimously selected to fight

18 February 2010

Around 300 Sinn Féin activists packed into the Roddy McCorley club in west Belfast on Tuesday night for the selection convention to agree the party's candidate for the constituency. Gerry Kelly MLA chaired the event and Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew officiated over the nomination and selection process. There were no other candidates standing and Gerry Adams was unanimously selected to represent Sinn Féin in the next Westminster election in a few months. Free article

Bill of Rights consultation document

The British Government's consultation on a proposed Bill of Rights is an insult that ignores the advice of all those who spent years seeking agreement on what rights and protections the Bill should contain, Sinn Féin Equality and Human Rights spokesperson Martina Anderson said this week.
