Pay off: Sectarian militia members receive golden handshake

The British government announced last week that 3,000 serving members of the Royal Irish Regiment are to be rewarded with golden handshakes of £28,000 (€40,600) to each full time soldier - on top of their redundancy package and army pensions - and £14,000 (€20,300) for the part-timers. But no amount of money or medals, can disguise the UDR/RIR's institutional criminality, enabled and encouraged by the British government and political Unionism. Free article

Aer Lingus: Privatisation imminent

The impending government decision to sell Aer Lingus will be strongly opposed by a SIPTU campaign growing in momentum. Members in Shannon and Dublin Airports have enthusiastically backed proposals for a protective ballot on industrial action. A meeting in Cork Airport is expected to yield a similar result. Adams in US: Seeking support for process

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams MP departed for the US last weekend to attend a series of engagements in New York, Washington DC and Massachusetts, where he will seek US support for Sinn Féin's strategy for the speedy restoration of the all Ireland political institutions. Free article

Use of Shannon Airport

Sinn Féin spokesperson on International Affairs, Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD, joined members of the the Oireachtas in a protest in Shannon Airport on Wednesday. They were part of a wider group of anti-war activists protesting at the continued use of Shannon Airport by the US military participating in conflicts in the Middle East. Free article

Sectarian upsurge in wake of UDA arrests

Claims that the UDA intends to end it's sectarian campaign have been dismissed, as nationalists across the North face an upsurge in loyalist death theats and sectarian attacks. Dismissing the UDA statement Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness said "we need to hear and see from the UDA evidence that their violent campaign against Catholics is over". Free article

1916 auction: TD calls for government action

Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has described as "scandalous" the planned auction of priceless historical documents and other artefacts associated with the 1916 Rising and the Irish independence struggle, in a sale planned by two auction houses in the week of the 90th anniversary of the Rising. Fógraí bháis: Tireless campaigner for Inquiry into father's murder

I met Albert Fullerton six years ago as the 10th anniversary of his father's murder was approaching. I was sent to write a story for this paper. In the succeeding months after the piece was written my car learned the way from Letterkenny to Cockhill in Buncrana. I was always made welcome, as Albert became my tutor in the minutiae of the Eddie Fullerton case. Free article
