The shambolic sop to unionists, otherwise known as the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC), came into effect yesterday.The body, which is entirely outside the realm and spirit of the Good Friday Agreement (GFA), is the only element of the two governments' 2003 Joint Declaration that they have seen fit to implement. McDowell's role is bad news for Peace Process - Fianna Fáil/PD Government undermines Good Friday Agreement

On its last day before the Christmas recess, the Dáil passed a Bill endorsing an agreement signed by Justice Minister Michael McDowell and the British ambassador. This will allow the British Secretary of State to expel a Minister from the Executive in the Six Counties without a cross-community vote in the Assembly. IRA New Year Message

In its New Year message, the leadership of the IRA has again called on others, particularly the British Government, to fulfill their commitments to facilitate progress in the Peace Process. The leadership of Óglaigh na hÉireann extend New Year greetings to all our Volunteers, friends and supporters at home and abroad. Review must be focused on governments' failures

Brits proposed giving Army carte blanche - 1973 State Papers: Operation Folklore

A plan to impose British control in the Six Counties through a military assault on nationalist areas has been revealed in government papers released by the British Public Records Office. The plan, codenamed Operation Folklore, was being formulated in late 1973, and envisaged allowing British soldiers to open fire, with comprehensive legal immunity, on unarmed civilians. Free article
