David Trimble's decision to resign from his position as First Minister in the Six-County Assembly, if the IRA does not decommission weapons by 1 July, is an ``absolute disaster" for the peace process, according to Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness. Free article

The British government came under increased pressure this week as calls for independent public inquiries into controversial killings involving British state forces in the North of Ireland intensified following a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. The court found the British government guilty of violating the human rights of 12 Irish people shot dead by British Crown and Pro British forces in the 1980s and 1990s. Free article

Saturday 5 May was the 20th anniversary of the death of Bobby Sands and throughout Ireland over the weekend commemorations were held to remember, honour and also celebrate the lives of twelve brave men - the ten who died in the H Block hunger strike and Michael Gaughan and Frank Stagg, who died on hunger strike in jails in England. Destroyed Finucane tape linked to Stobie handler

The RUC Special Branch officer at the centre of last week's revelation that a taped confession to the Finucane killing had been deliberately replaced and probably destroyed has been identified as one of William Stobie's handlers. Free article

Hamill family still seek justice

Short reprieve for Mayo

Enterprise Energy Ireland (EEI) has submitted a new planning application for its proposed gas terminal and cleaning station for North West Mayo, because as Minister of Marine, Frank Fahey says, ``We weren't happy with the first environmental impact statement.'' Free article
