Dáil General Election Profile : Felix Gallagher, Dublin West

Fingal County Councillor Felix Gallagher (35) is the Sinn Féin general election candidate for Dublin West. A big Celtic fan who studied Economics at Glasgow University, he talks to Ella O'Dwyer about his upbringing, his 13 years in Dublin that has seen him marry and have three young children, and his work managing a grassroots community development project in Corduff, West Dublin. Probably one of the most redrawn constituencies in the 26 Counties, Dublin West includes Castleknock, most of Mulhuddart and Corduff as well as Carpenterstown, Barberstown, Clonsilla and Ongar. Electoral boundary revisions are a dangerous business. A heady mix of political shenanigans, legal niceties and constitutional minefields. Most politicians treat boundary reviews in a similar fashion to a Brit in Basra being presented with a bunch of flowers. Seems quite attractive but experience says it could blow up in your face. Abolition anniversary should focus attention on modern forms of slavery

Last Sunday, 25 March, marked the bicentenary of the abolition of the British slave trade. It was a further 26 years before Bill for the 'Total Abolition of Colonial Slavery' was passed in 1833. A look at the struggle that led up to the passage of the 1807 legislation demonstrates that it takes courage and tenacity to fight for ideals in face of powerful economic forces.
