OPINION: Journey from resistance to liberation and state power

24 August 2006

The hope and potential generated by republican initiatives last year has been frustrated by vested interests who feel threatened by the prospect of Sinn Féin in power. Here, DECLAN KEARNEY argues that republicans need to counter this by internalising our strategy, refusing to be fixated on diversionary political tactics, increasing our support and maximising the impact of republican politics. Remembering 1981: Owen Carron retains Bobby Sands seat

24 August 2006

Thursday, 20 August 1981 was a day of both immense sadness and resounding triumph for the H-Block/Armagh campaign. At 7.50am Michael Devine, the 10th Hunger Striker to die, passed away. Later on that day Owen Carron, who had been Bobby Sands's election agent, took the Fermanagh/South Tyrone Westminster seat left vacant by the death of Bobby Sands. Interview: Ian Milne - freedom fighter, public representative

24 August 2006

Once on the 'Three Most Wanted List' of the British Army and the RUC alongside close friend and fellow IRA Volunteer Francis Hughes, Ian Milne is now chairperson of Magherafelt District Council, one of an eight-strong team of Sinn Féin councillors on the County Derry local authority. Here, talking to An Phoblacht's ELLA O'DWYER it is clear that he has lost none of the vigour and vitality that saw him through the fields of South Derry with Francis Hughes and the H-Blocks to continue the struggle on a new stage. The former blanketman looks to new generations of republicans to do likewise. Free article

Workers' Rights: Action needed on workplace deaths

24 August 2006

Figures for workplace fatalities in the 26 Counties are increasing by the month and it should be worrying: for workers and their families, for trade unions, for employers, and for the Government. Free article

Mitchel McLaughlin Column

24 August 2006

The last of the Hunger Strikers to die in 1981, INLA Volunteer Michael Devine was remembered at a well-attended march and commemoration in his native Derry on Sunday last. As with all of the other Hunger Strike commemorations, the attendance covered all ages, including those who were not even born at the time of the Hunger Strikes. It was a fitting tribute to a proud soldier of Ireland. The attendance by representatives of the broad spectrum of the republican family also showed that despite ideological or policy differences there remains a genuine consensus on the massive contribution made by the ten IRA and INLA Volunteers to the republican struggle. Réabhlóid Chúba as Seo Amach

24 August 2006

Tar éis do Fidel Castro seasamh síos mar cheannaire ar Chúba ar feadh 47 bliain mar gheall ar fháthanna sláinte, tá neart tuairimíochta ann faoin méid atá i ndán do Réabhlóid Chúba. Idir an dá linn ó sheas sé síos agus má thagann feabhas ar a shláinte nó má fhaigheann sé bás amach anseo, tá a dheartháir Raúl tagtha i gcomharbacht air. Maoítear gur fear é Raúl a sheasann go crua le bunaidhmeanna na Réabhlóide agus a shéanann cur chuige pragmatach a dhearthár. Tá neart daoine lasmuigh de Chúba a cheistíonn comharbacht Raúl ar Fidel, ach b'fhiú a chuimhniú go raibh Raúl mar cheann de na príomheagruithe ó thús na Réabhlóide agus tar éis dóibh teacht i gcumhacht, chaith sé an tréimhse sin uile mar Aire Cosanta. Níl mórán amhrais ann faoina chreidiúintí réabhlóideacha ach tá neart ann a cheistíonn an bhfuil an cur chuige ceart aige tabhairt faoin tréimhse iar-Fidel a bhéas le teacht agus nárb fhearr go dtiocfaidh ceannasaíocht úr aníos ó ghlúin níos óige. The Matt Treacy Column

24 August 2006

There is not much recent Championship history between Dublin and Mayo. The last time they met was at this stage in 1985 when Dublin won after a replay. All I can remember clearly is that Padraig Brogan scored a brilliant goal and that there was lots of controversy when Mayo defender John Finn had his jaw broken by one of the Dublin forwards. It was one of those occasions when Micheál Ó Hehir would announce in bewildered tones: "I can't for the life of me understand what all the booing is about." Which meant that someone was after being "done" off the ball. Free article

Remembering the Past

24 August 2006

In August 1969, the Six Counties erupted in civil unrest and loyalist pogrom as the "Protestant state for a Protestant people" came apart at the seams. Fuelled by the demand for civil rights, nationalists were no longer prepared to endure discrimination and second-class citizenship, and the only answer the statelet had for the demands of its oppressed minority was violence and repression.
