Ché Guevara

Fuair Ché Guevara Ó Loinsigh bás aréir, 40 bliain ó shin, nuair a mharaigh na Poncánaigh é, sa bhealach céanna inár mharaigh siad ceannaire Ghuatamala sna caogaidí agus an bealch céanna ina ndearna siad iarracht Castro a chur i leataobh sna seascaidí, ionas go mbeidh smacht iomlán acu ar Mheiricéa Theas, agus go mbeadh lámh shaor ag na comhlachtaí caife agus bananaí agus go mbeadh siad in ann na tíortha sin a úsáid mar chlós súgartha i gcomhair ólacháin, striapach agus cearrbhachais.

The Mitchel McLaughlin Column

A MOTION was tabled at the Assembly on Tuesday by Ulster Unionist MLA David McNarry calling for a ban on the use of the Irish language in the Assembly chamber. Now, at first glance, this could be viewed as paranoid ranting by a unionist politician who despises all things Irish and is uncomfortable with his own Irishness. Matt Treacy

IN HIS 1936 novel, In Dubious Battle, John Steinbeck depicts a strike by Californian fruit pickers. The main protagonists are Jim Nolan and Mac, two solutions-oriented Communist Party organisers who take jobs as pickers in order to do a bit of what used to be known in the old days as agitation. But sure, young people nowadays would know nothing about that sort of thing.

THE DEBATE in The Irish Times about Fianna Fáil's discovery of the Six Counties has not contained any cheap shots or sarcastic commentary about that party's belated and cosmetic reversion to republicanism. The so-called 'Republican Party' is no longer content to 'stand idly by', as declared 38 years ago by the then Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader, Jack Lynch, who certainly was not idle as he proceeded to repress Southern republicans while ignoring the pleas of Northern nationalists in the face of unionist pogroms and the British Army.
